# Local development setup

## Prerequisites
- PHP and extensions required by the selected supported Laravel version.
- Composer.
- MySQL/MariaDB.
- Node.js/npm if compiling frontend assets.

## Initialize an empty prototype checkout
```bash
git clone https://github.com/mayembem34/hms-prototype.git
cd hms-prototype
bash scripts/bootstrap.sh
```

The bootstrap script downloads the current supported Laravel application skeleton using Composer. It is intended to run **once** on a fresh repository and will refuse to replace a pre-existing Laravel install.

## Database
Create a local empty MySQL database and a least-privilege development user. Update `.env` with your values:

```dotenv
DB_CONNECTION=mysql
DB_HOST=127.0.0.1
DB_PORT=3306
DB_DATABASE=hms_prototype
DB_USERNAME=your_local_user
DB_PASSWORD=your_local_password
```

Then run:

```bash
php artisan migrate
php artisan serve
```

Run `npm install && npm run build` if the frontend uses Vite assets.

**Status:** Laravel skeleton generation is a local setup step. Domain migrations, auth, tenant provisioning, and patient screens are the next implementation milestone. Do not use live patient data.
